Walking Tour of Downtown Chilliwack

On June 21st Heritage Chilliwack Society set off on a trial run of the widely anticipated walking tour of heritage buildings in downtown Chilliwack.  The walking tour started in Central Community Park with Laura Reid speaking about Central Elementary School. 18 people participated in the walk .

The tour had a total of 6 stops and took approximately 32 minutes to complete. Laura shared historical information at each stop, highlighted with a brief fun fact about each location. At the end of the walk we received feedback and suggestions  from the public and members who attended .

The tour will officially kick off on Friday July 17th and will include all four Party In The Park evenings this summer which are July 17th, July 24th, August 14th and August 21st.

HERITAGE WEEK 2015 CELEBRATED IN CHILLIWACK  Volunteers from Heritage Chilliwack Society were busy Sunday morning prepping their display of archival parade photos in the windows of the Royal Hotel for the start of Heritage Week that runs from Feb. 16th through 22nd this year. Parades have drawn residents of Chilliwack downtown for decades as a way to celebrate and to commemorate important community events. Keeping with this year’s Heritage Week theme “Main Street, At the Heart of the Community” Heritage Chilliwack Society encourages the public to view the archival parade photos in the windows of the Royal Hotel until Feb 22nd.

In addition to downtown parade images, courtesy of the Chilliwack Museum & Archives, are historical photographs of the Royal Engineers Band, displayed in the lobby of the hotel and on loan from CFB Chilliwack Historical Society’s Museum on Hocking Avenue. “Our Main Streets and traditional downtowns are a heritage worth celebrating. As venues for commerce, entertainment, worship, shopping and more, they speak volumes about a community’s social and economic history.” (Heritage Canada the National Trust)

Heritage Chilliwack is a volunteer run, community based initiative established to engage, advocate for and promote Chilliwack’s heritage. Incorporated in August 2014 Heritage Chilliwack Society’s first community project follows a successful inaugural meet & greet and task force meeting, both held in January where members signed up to work on heritage related projects.

Heritage Chilliwack welcomes new members. For more information please contact us by email at or search for Heritage Chilliwack Society on Facebook
