Chilliwack owners of heritage homes with architectural or historical significance may be interested to learn more about obtaining heritage designation.

Heritage Chilliwack Society is hosting a special event Thursday, April 7 at 7 p.m. at the Royal Hotel to shed light on the topic.

About a dozen homes and buildings in Chilliwack currently have heritage status.

“Heritage properties in Chilliwack reflect our city’s history, and help to tell the story of our past,” said said Heritage Chilliwack spokesperson Laura Reid. “They are among the most tangible remnants of early settlement and development.”

Many of the older buildings boast solid construction, unique details and “contribute significantly to the urban flavour and essence of our city,” she said.

The evening event is geared to those who may be curious about heritage designation, or learning more about the existing heritage inventory.

Speakers will range from the head of the Chilliwack Museum, to city staff, heritage home owners, and more.

City of Chilliwack’s Karen Stanton, manager of long range planning, as well as heritage homeowners who have gone through the process will be on hand to answer questions during a Q&A session at the end.

Under the Local Government Act, municipalities can designate properties in their community that are architecturally, historically or culturally unique, while voluntary heritage designation provides a level of protection to preserve the building or property for future generations.

“Just being old is not enough, though,” said Reid. “Keep in mind simple family homes, barns and structures can also be designated.”

The event at the Royal Hotel Thursday is free and refreshments will be served.
